Bernie Or Bust – The Audacity of Compromise
Last night I had an engaging discussion about the state of the US presidential race with left of center Democrats. One topic discussed was about the Bernie Or Bust folks who are voicing their migration to Jill Stein(Green Party) or Gary Johnson (Libertarian Party) or not voting at all: in other words voting for Donald J. Trump. We discussed an array of issues but this morning I woke up with the following question.
How does voting for a 3rd Party (OR NOT VOTING AT ALL) help America if you were a Bernie Sanders supporter? Why would one risk throwing all their hard work considering the progress Bernie’s campaign made to shift the DNC further to the left? If they followed him – why don’t they accept his endorsement of Hillary Clinton and compromise?
I’ve come to the following assumption:
Bernie Or Bust
folks have less to lose if Trump wins. I don’t have the numbers, so this assumption is based only on my personal observation – but I believe a SIGNIFICANTLY low % of minorities are willing to vote 3rd Party (OR NOT VOTE AT ALL) because of what is at stake. I know White #BernieOrBust folks are going to crucify me for this… but you have a clear advantage going forward in life. But you know this. It’s why you don’t truly feel threatened by a Trump presidency. But, do you really want a President who believes:
a. Arab-Americans cheered the attacks on 9/11.
b. The US should use waterboarding and advocates war-crimes.
c. Building a “great, great wall” between the US and Mexico is a cure.
d. The Black Lives Matter movement is “trouble”.
e. Current unemployment statistics are wrong.
f. Climate change is just “weather” (a hoax).
g. Muslims should not be admitted to the US.
h. Doctors should be punished for administering abortions
I can go on. But, Bernie supporters choosing to go to a 3rd party or not voting is selfish and I’m aghast by how content #BernieOrBust folks are with their decision.
Look, Bernie Or Bust was a good marketing slogan; but now, it’s a threat to our democracy: the supreme court; religious freedom; gay rights; pro choice; the environment; our international reputation and so on. I’m sure if I go through my Facebook feed I will find where I have written #BernieOrBust. Shoot, I even deleted people who were against me – and I admit it was immature. I didn’t accomplish much – except to create an even safer bubble for myself. But that was selfish of me. I guess I like feeling comfortable with the lies I tell myself to get through life. But, I changed my mind. This doesn’t mean that I’m inconsistent – no, it means that I am open to COMPROMISE and working with people to find areas in which we can work forward on and leave the disagreements that stagnate progress behind. Bernie Sanders knows this – it’s why he’s with HER.
For the record, I donated to Bernie Sanders‘s campaign, I made phone calls to family members and friends to discuss the issues and I knew he was the Moon Shot Candidate for our times. But we didn’t LAND like we had hoped. And it sucks. But that doesn’t mean I give up on him. We gave Hillary a good fight – it was HUGE and I’m proud of that. As a result the DNC has adopted many of his policy platforms and goals…
…and that folks – is PROGRESS: a tangible and realistic shift to the left that Bernie supporters should feel proud of.
I am looking into how I can participate in aiding Hillary Clinton – not because I am a big fan of hers – I am not – or the oligarchy her candidacy promotes. However, I am convinced that her and the Democratic platform most aligns with my values and I’d much rather compromise with her than with Trump, who is INSANE. Also, Hillary has a greater shot of continuing Obama’s 3rd term, who I deeply admire. As Obama said last night, “America, you have vindicated that hope these past eight years. And now I’m ready to pass the baton and do my part as a private citizen. This year, in this election, I’m asking you to join me – to reject cynicism, reject fear, to summon what’s best in us; to elect Hillary Clinton as the next President of the United States, and show the world we still believe in the promise of this great nation.”
